Newsletter One Life-Lifting Searching for a name for the course I hope to teach to increase happiness I went over some situations that occurred recently that gladdened my heart and added a refreshing joy to the participants. The first occurred when I was buying a replacement microwave. Finding the one I wanted, a problem occurred with my trying to lift the carton from the shelf to fit on top of my cart. It was just heavy and large enough that I was unsure of my strength for the transfer. I looked for an employee and saw none. A woman with two young children in her cart was coming up the aisle, so I moved my cart out of her way. She passed, turned back, and said: “ Could you use some help?” I chuckled and said I really could. I started to lift one side thinking she would lift the other but she picked up the whole thing with relative ease and balanced it on my cart while I kept an eye on her children. I thanked her and she said she carried two children around so she was quite strong. Besides the help, what impressed me was the lift to her shoulders, the spring in her step as she went on, and the joyous expression on her face. The second occurred when a man came to my home for a required inspection of an electrical system. I showed him to my garage where it is located, and he commented on my exercise machine partially put together as I couldn’t lift the heavy parts that went up and over a vertical support. We talked about the adequacy of the system in relation to the size of the house, it passed inspection and I started to lead him back through the house. He smiled and asked if I would show him the other parts and he would put the machine together for me. He proceeded to do so, tried out the different parts and then prepared to leave. I thanked him and an extra spring was in his steps as he started to leave. There again was that joyous expression on his face as he went out the door. The research and teaching/coaching of the Positive Psychologists focus on looking for the good in people and mental health. Dr. Martin E.P. Seligman teaches The Authentic Happiness Coaching Program, of which I am a Vanguard Graduate. Exercises to increase happiness and the means to prove it! What a powerful benefit for mankind.! So I mused over different names for my course based on his work, and “Life-Lifting” prepared to launch.
