Research is proving the value to health and happiness to you and your community, of doing acts of charity, kindness, and being grateful to others who do act in a charitable way to you. An excellent coaching skill is challenge where the coach seeks to stretch the client beyond self-imposed limits. This may sound like the adage "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"-that's okay. I challenge you to consciously act charitably whenever you can. Observe your environment and think what you can do to make it better. It may be small, medium or large, any size will do. Then note if the recipient was grateful or not. How did you feel when you did something good for someone else? If you were genuinely thanked, did you appreciate it? If you were rebuffed, how did you react? Of course I hope you were not negatively treated, but unfortunately some people don't thank you for your kind actions. It would be another act of doing good to write me a note and share your experiences. E-mail or regular mail is okay.

Recently a study was published in The New England Journal of Medicine which suggested that friends and family have a strong influence on obesity, with same sex friends having more influence on its prevention than spouses. Dr. Richard Suzman, Phd, is the Director of Behavioral and Social research at the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health, which funded the study(the data was based on the Framingham Heart Study). He predicted that the social network theory will be pursued in research and other health issues. In "The Balance within",(the science connecting health and emotions), Dr. Esther Sternberg, W.H. Freeman and Company, New York, 2001, and other books I have written about on this site, this friends and family relationship, and the significant other, point to the value and influence of people who eat, drink and exercise wisely, heed good advice, and enjoy taking care of themselves and others according to their abilities.

A cataract grows and gradually clouds vision, preventing discernment of letters, shapes and details in the environment. Eventually if not removed the result can be blindness.
An analogy to life coaching came to me when this June, I had a cataract removed and a newly developed lens implanted. The result was so outstanding in my ability to see things clearly, that my time, too, increased in happiness. My environment was safer, because I could see and move around better, and there was more joy, appreciation, wonder and awe, and a lot of gratitude.
As a Life Coach, I like to help people with their ability to see, to remove blocks, use their strengths, aid focus on their goals, potential, and the pleasure of meaning and fulfillment in their lives.
The sciences of Positive Psychology, Happiness and Coaching are based on the ability to look for the good in a person. That's another way to get a new lens on life.

The Happy Works Club community website is now a reality at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HWCcommunity. The group e-mail address is HWCcommunity@yahoogroups.com.
It makes your day, your community, the world better when people do good things.
Research in neuroscience and positive psychology are discovering this to be true, religion tells us so, and many people say so.
What are the deeds that make this happen? They are many and varied in size and situation.
This is an invitation to join the Happy Works Club community website.
Think of something good you have done, and post it on the website. It may be an example for someone else. Big or small, if it does good for someone else it benefits you.

Although the use of the word coach may be used by anyone, the ICF ethics adhere to higher standards for the profession of coaching and for their coachees/clients.
